pictograms, 4x4

The inspiration for the Pictogram project as a whole was the designs used to represent each of the sports in the Olympics, specifically the ones used for the most recent 2021 games. Being in cheer, I can relate to a microscopic - but still relevant - amount of the athleticism demonstrated by the gymnasts in the games. I used a picture of me doing a back tuck for reference, and broke my figure into the most basic and immediately recognizable geometrics, rather than trying to fully mimic the complexity of the human skeleton. The circles surrounding the figure are meant to represent the basic motion of the rotation. Ultimately the intention behind the design was to break down a movement into its mechanics.

In Graphics 3, I have been learning to view human life via shape and through a more abstract and simplified lense; rather than trying to mimic life's vitality, I have been attempting to just simply draw exactly what I observe. The nose monograms have been a simple observation of the centerpiece of human faces and trying to strip it of its humanity and translate it through basic line, shape, and composition.

The Melting Woman was an exploration of perspective and attempting to design a face with as few shapes as possible for the face itself. I used all organic shapes in order to give the visual of melting. The monochromatic color palette was done to give the piece depth without using traditional coloring and shadowing. I decided to use organic shapes since humans are made up of extremely complex shapes that are far from geometric.

The purpose of this project was to observe letters and typography as variations on shape and composition, rather than only a method of communication. Using Times New Roman, I attempted to re-envision a classic font as a swirly and modern visual. I played around with multiple compositions and utilized different visuals of negative space. I settled with Times New Roman for this work because of its commonality in school and work settings, but also its swooping serifs that made for an interesting negative space.

"everybody wants to love you"

This poster's color palette was inspired by 80's electronic music and the graphics and colors that coincided with that genre. The diagonal line cutting off some of the graphic was placed to give the impression of sliding and fighting against the pull of gravity. The robot in the piece is holding a weapon and faced away from what it's fighting.
